Doodling” was something that I recall doing even as a child; but this new phase started sometime in December 2009. Unlike so many other things in my life, I didn’t analyze it, and over-analyze it, and research it, and study it and practice it…I just started…with a Finepoint Sharpie in the upper corner of a Moleskine, 5″ X 8- 1/4″ Plain Reporter Notebook..an item that fast became one of my best “friends.” This post features the result of our first encounter with one another. I call it “Baroque”…I can’t give you any deep, insightful reason…it just LOOKS Baroque. Sometimes, things are just that…plain and simple. In the beginning, I just drew for hours on end. Initially, there was no rhyme or reason, although, as patterns developed, sometimes a composition would beg for little “rules”. Even amongst the little rules, they somehow took on a life of their own. After a while, I began to imagine what wonderful things you could do with the patterns…and that imagination took the compositions in one direction or another.
One day I started researching what programs were available to turn original line art into vector art. I am self-taught using Adobe Illustrator; so being self-taught I was not really aware of all that was possible with the program. So you can imagine my surprise and joy when my research brought me right back to the program I was already using! I began to scan my original drawings and manipulate them into patterns, using the Adobe Illustrator LiveTrace command. Some of the patterns I imagined during the drawing process…and others became “happy accidents.” I hope you enjoy watching my style evolve…
