I call it Functional Sculpture…because it is!

The entries for the HP Ultrabook Bag contest wrap up this evening and I just posted my second design! Did I mention that another favorite Project Runway designer is the spokesperson and judge for this contest? MONDO GUERRA! His aesthetic just really speaks to me!

My second bag design is called Functional Sculpture. Everything that looks cool has a purpose. Hoping and praying my two submission make the judges top 40 and then its up to the public to select the TOP 5!

ReBirth…ReInvention…ReVized…

Oh, the joy of discovery. It can be terrifying and gratifying all at the same time. I once asked the question if fear and passion can occupy the same place? The answer is a resounding yes…but that’s ok. Because on the other side of fear is usually something better than we can possibly imagine… Continue reading →

Sweet victory…10.15.10

Project : Echoes – 10.15.10

I have so many fond memories of teaching art to middle school students. Don’t get me wrong…they were a CHALLENGE!  But, all ‘n all, it was a life-changing experience for me. Many times the energy of the kids just simply derailed my best-laid intentions at a lesson plan. It was a good thing I was flexible, and could roll with it.  I just felt strongly that, if they were talking about it, it was important to them…so why not capitalize on an opportunity to meet their needs? The Language of Design…10.01.10

Project : Echoes – 10.01.10

One of the things that I always taught my kids in my middle school art class was that all design starts on paper…in two dimensions. As an architect, that is where my training began…creating two-dimensional collages where I learned two of my favorite terms – figure-ground and figure-ground reversal. These are my favorites because they are often illustrated in a black and white composition…and nothing is more appealing to me than classic black & white. Continue reading →

Something new! “Regular expressions” for textiles…

I ran across this term “regular expressions” this morning…Since I am more of a creative and not a computer geek, the expression “regular expression” is new to me. But it has to do with search terms and pattern in software syntax. I really like the term…and I know that somewhere in there is a connection to the graphic representations that we as surface designers create.  I am going to research it more and get back to you! 🙂 Continue reading →

Mondrian through the eyes of a 12-year-old…

I had my first opportunity this past year to do something I have always wanted to do…work with youth.
