Most of my drawing compositions involve a self-contained element that I then manipulate by reflecting and copying in interesting arrangements to create a pattern. The spacing between the elements, or whitespace, becomes as much a part of the composition as the elements themselves.Â
Every now and then, however, I take pleasure in creating an all-over pattern on a single page of my sketchbook. At some point, I will enjoy turning these pieces into very cool pattern repeats. I adore studies in black & white; but I look forward to the future project of adding color to these compositions. I have included two pieces that I have developed with color as a preview, that I envision as contemporary area rug designs:
